Vieques
Vieques is Old Caribbean in both its charm and challenges. Visitors who love Vieques are seeking a non-Disney outdoor experience and see it’s imperfections as refreshingly authentic.
The Isla de Vieques is approximately 21 miles long and 4.5 miles wide. Only about one-third of the island is populated (9,000 inhabitants) with the balance of the island under the supervision of the Department of the Interior Fish and Wildlife Service.
Getting There. To get to Vieques from San Juan, you can take a ferry or small plane. Cape Air from SJU is one of our preferred air providers from San Juan as they run closest to their scheduled times. Reservations can be made from their website at www.capeair.com.
VAL out of Isla Grande airport (a short cab ride from SJU) is also a good choice and can be less expensive http://viequesairlink.com/.
Another option is to take the ferry from the Fajardo Ferry Terminal. The town of Fajardo is a one hour (plus) taxi ride from San Juan. Transportation from the San Juan Airport to the Ferry Terminal can be prearranged. We recommend Travel with Padin (787) 355-6146. The larger your party the more the ferry makes sense. Ferry Reservations are not required and tickets can be purchased at the ticket counter just prior to your departure. For ferry departure schedules go to http://www.elenas-vieques.com/ferry.html
Getting Around. You will need a car to truly enjoy your visit to Vieques. Whether you're renting a house like ours in Villa Borinquen (see maps), staying at the Trade Winds in Esperanza or the Bravo Beach Hotel in Isabel Segunda, you will want to be able to go from one side of the island to the other. The amazing beaches of Vieques are only accessible by car. We prefer Maritza's Car Rental (787) 741- 0078 http://www.maritzascarrental.com/.
However there are a number of alternatives listed on the travel information page of www.enchanted-isle.com. It is very important to make your car rental reservation as early as possible.
Staying in touch. Most cell phone carriers work on the island
Dining In. There are two large Morales Supermarkets on Vieques. Both are in or near Isabel Segunda. There are many small markets on the island that stock pretty much everything. The Green Store near Esperanza has a good selection of items you might need. Fresh fruits and veggies can be purchased at the vegetable stand at the intersection of Rt. 200 & 997. The vegetable stand is open everyday.
Dining Out. We love Lazy Jack's for drinks and pizza, the Trade Winds for lunch or dinner, El Quenepo for something a little more elegant and Roy's Coffee Shop for their breakfast and wi-fi. When you come to Vieques, you will undoubtedly find your own favorite bars and restaurants. The Next Course, Che Shack, Duffy's, Banana's, La Taverna, Richard's or Al's Mar Azul and many others to choose from.
Outdoor Adventures. Vieques is known for it's wonderful snorkeling. Equipment can be rented or purchased from Black Beards in Isabel Segunda. Black Beards offers tours and will also let you know where to snorkel on your own. Vieques is home to the brightest Bioluminescent Bay in the world. Island Adventures is one of the many who offer tours. If this is an important part of your visit to the island check their "moonwatch" calendar before booking your stay with us.
Vieques is more of an Adventure Island than a Resort Island. Your stay on Vieques will be wild and wonderfully memorable.
Have Fun!
